Dry Eye is a common condition that occurs when your tears cannot moisten your eyes enough. Tears can be insufficient and unstable for many reasons. For example, dry eyes can occur if you don't produce enough tears or produce poor-quality tears. This tear instability leads to inflammation and damage to the surface of the eye. Dry eyes are a common and often chronic problem, especially in older adults. With each blink, tears spread across the front surface of the eye, known as the cornea. Tears moisturize, reduce the risk of eye infection, remove foreign objects from the eye, and keep the eye surface smooth and clear. Excess tears in the eyes flow into small drainage channels in the inner corners of the eyelids, which empty into the bridge of the nose. Dry eyes can occur when tear production and drainage are out of balance.
