Microdiscectomy, also called Microlumbar Discectomy (MLD), is performed for patients with a painful herniated lumbar disc. It consists of the removal of a portion of the intervertebral disc, the herniated or protruding portion that is compressing the spinal nerve root.
If a disc herniation in the low back results in significant nerve impingement or leg pain, despite conservative treatment for 6 weeks, lumbar microdiscectomy surgery is typically recommended.
The surgery usually lasts for 1-1.5 hours.
Will there be a scar on my back?
Yes. The usual incision scar is1-1.5 inches in the mid-line of the low back.
Lumbar microdiscectomy is performed on an outpatient basis with no a maximum of one overnight stay in the hospital.
This surgery is done under general anesthesia and the usual risks associated with it will be explained in detail before undergoing the procedure. However, this is a relatively safe procedure.
